In which we talk about CCTV systems, and software that lets you roll your own.
Just the Tip
- Multiple weeks after QNAP’s compromise, they finally make a statement – and try to blame it on something that wasn’t the cause.
- He talks about AIDE. Again.
Notes
Starts at 18m20s.
I was drinking Troeg Breweries’ Troegenator. Paden was drinking New Amsterdam vodka. Jthan was drinking Red Stripe.
- CCTV monitoring/physical security monitoring
- The most well-known is ZoneMinder.
- It’s intuitive… but very dated in its presentation. Very clunky.
- It’s also only really good up to about 6 cameras before it starts hitting some brick walls.
- I also tried Shinobi.
- Which seems to be the best option for features and responsiveness/performance, but it’s a pain in the ass to install. It’s also written in Node.js…
- The solution I ended up going with for now is motion and motionEye.
- motionEye is still on Python 2. Lame.
- I got a HikVision DS-2DE3304W-DE camera. I also have a Logitech c920 connected to a Raspberry Pi 4. I then collate both RTSP streams into a central motionEye instance for simultaneous viewing.
- You can end up saving a lot of money if you focus your camera purchases on their specific purpose. If you try to get a camera that can do it all, expect the price to increase tenfold.
- Camera monitoring/CCTV is invaluable for “looking into the past”, and can offer an indispensable source of evidence/proof if litigation is required.
- I failed to mention it during the show, but DO NOT MAKE YOUR NVR INTERNET-ACCESSIBLE. Things like this and this exist.
- CCTV tech in general lags about 10-15 years behind. It’s a bit painful.
- The most well-known is ZoneMinder.
15 Clams
In this segment, Jthan shares with you a little slice of life. The title is a reference to this video. (2m16s in)
Starts at 1h11m26s.
Don’t use Gitter.
Also, make it easy for people to contribute to your F/OSS project.
Errata
- Paden has switched to a Blue Yeti Nano.
- Jthan has indeed said: “[2:53 PM] jthan: maybe I’m a pregnant teen”.
- If you have the trusted role on our Discord, you can view that exact message here.
- The Chewbacca Defense.
- I’ve shown Jthan photos of the new ferrets. If you’re in our Discord, you can see them too! They are Pickles and Kora.
- I referred to my central motionEye instance as an “NRV” multiple times. It’s actually NVR. Whoops!
- Regarding submerged datacenters, Jthan was talking about this, but I was talking about this (It gets interesting around 3m11s).
- Webcam covers are a good idea, but you should still always wear pants.
- Guys. Cream of Mushroom soup is definitely in clam chowder.
